Job Description
Hiring.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Horticulturist – Professional to join our dedicated team in Regent Park, Toronto. This pivotal role requires an individual with extensive knowledge of plant science, landscape design principles, and sustainable gardening practices to maintain and enhance our diverse portfolio of green spaces. As a Professional Horticulturist, you will be instrumental in the planning, implementation, and ongoing care of botanical collections, public gardens, and community green initiatives, ensuring their health, aesthetic appeal, and ecological function.
You will lead by example, guiding junior staff and collaborating with cross-functional teams including urban planners, community organizers, and volunteers. Your expertise will be crucial in developing and executing comprehensive horticultural programs, pest and disease management strategies, and irrigation plans tailored to Toronto’s unique climate and environmental considerations. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive horticultural programs for various urban green spaces.
- Manage plant health, including pest and disease identification, diagnosis, and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
- Design and execute planting schemes, considering soil conditions, light requirements, aesthetic impact, and native plant integration.
- Supervise and train junior horticultural staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Conduct regular inspections of grounds, identifying maintenance needs and proactively addressing issues.
- Manage irrigation systems, ensuring efficient water use and plant hydration.
- Maintain accurate records of plant inventories, treatments, and project progress.
- Collaborate with urban planners and community stakeholders on new landscape projects and initiatives.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations in all horticultural activities.
- Prepare budget recommendations for plant materials, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
Required Skills
- Minimum 4 years of professional experience in horticulture, landscape management, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of plant identification, botany, soil science, and entomology.
- Proficiency in integrated pest management (IPM) techniques and sustainable horticultural practices.
- Experience with landscape design principles and implementation.
- Ability to operate and maintain various horticultural equipment and tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and collaborate effectively.
- Valid Ontario G driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Certification as a Certified Horticultural Technician (CHT) or similar professional accreditation.
- Experience working in urban park systems or public garden environments.
- Knowledge of native plant species suitable for the Toronto climate.
- Proficiency with irrigation system design and maintenance.
- Experience with GIS software for mapping and landscape planning.
