Job Description

Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Mason Apprentice to join our growing construction team immediately. This is an unparalleled opportunity for individuals eager to embark on a fulfilling career in the masonry trade, working on diverse projects across Ottawa, including significant heritage sites and new constructions near the historic Rideau Canal. As a Mason Apprentice, you will gain invaluable hands-on experience under the direct supervision of experienced journeyman masons, learning the intricate art and science of bricklaying, stonemasonry, and block laying.

You’ll be involved in all phases of masonry work, from site preparation and material handling to mixing mortar, cutting and laying various types of masonry units, and finishing. This apprenticeship will provide a structured pathway to becoming a certified journeyman mason, equipping you with practical skills and theoretical knowledge essential for a successful career in construction. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist journeyman masons with daily tasks, including material preparation, mixing mortar, and site cleanup.
  • Learn and practice safe handling of tools and equipment, including trowels, hammers, levels, and grinders.
  • Cut, lay, and spread mortar for bricks, blocks, and stones under supervision.
  • Carry and hoist masonry materials (bricks, blocks, stones, mortar) to work areas.
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding and other temporary structures safely.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring tools are properly cared for.
  • Follow blueprints, specifications, and instructions from supervisors.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Develop an understanding of different masonry techniques, materials, and their applications.
  • Contribute to maintaining a positive and productive team atmosphere on all job sites.

Required Skills

  • Strong physical stamina and ability to lift heavy materials repeatedly (up to 50 lbs).
  • Basic understanding of construction site safety practices and protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and a strong work ethic are essential.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take direction from experienced tradespeople.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a general labourer role on a construction site, even volunteer work.
  • Enrollment or demonstrated interest in a recognized apprenticeship program for masonry.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to various job sites across Ottawa.
  • Basic knowledge of measurements and calculations.
