Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain the sterile field during surgical procedures, ensuring optimal patient safety and infection control.
- Ensure all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are properly sterilized, assembled, and functioning correctly prior to use.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, efficiently passing instruments, supplies, and equipment with precision.
- Assist with draping the patient and the surgical area, adhering strictly to aseptic techniques.
- Perform meticulous surgical counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments with the circulating nurse at designated intervals.
- Assist in the preparation, handling, and accurate labelling of specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Handle and care for surgical equipment and instruments post-procedure, ensuring proper disposal or reprocessing according to protocols.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and safe operating room environment before, during, and after surgery.
- Adhere strictly to all aseptic techniques, infection control policies, and surgical safety standards.
- Participate actively in team briefings and debriefings to ensure seamless communication and coordination within the surgical team.
- Assist with patient positioning, transfer, and other pre/post-operative tasks as required.
Required Skills
- Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology or completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA or equivalent professional body.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist in an acute care setting, preferably in a hospital environment.
- Profound knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile techniques across various specialties.
- Exceptional manual dexterity, keen critical thinking, and advanced problem-solving skills.
- Strong ability to work effectively under pressure, adapt to changing situations, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective team collaboration and patient interaction.
- Thorough understanding of patient safety protocols, infection control practices, and relevant healthcare regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience across multiple surgical specialties (e.g., General Surgery, Orthopaedic, Gynaecological, Urology, ENT).
- Familiarity and proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development and ongoing learning through workshops or advanced courses.
